RLC students learn about the significance of Diwali

October 20, 2021

INA, IL (Oct. 20, 2021) -- Mandeep Redhu, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale’s Indian Student Association President, discusses the history, importance and cultural significance of Diwali the Festival of Lights on Wednesday afternoon during a presentation in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ Theater.

Diwali is known as the Festival of Lights, and it is an important celebration for all religions all over the world. It commemorates the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom Ayodhya after he was exiled for 14 years. The lanterns signify the jubilation the people of Ayodhya felt as they welcomed Rama back to the throne by firing crackers.

Diversity Week began Monday and continues through Friday, Oct. 22. It is a week of cultural and international themed events with the purpose of better understanding cultural and philosophical differences. Events include guest speakers, panel discussions and films.
